British-Nigerian-Brazilian designer Torishéju recently showcased her inaugural Spring Summer 2024 collection, titled “Fire on the Mountain.” The title is borrowed from a well-known collection of folk songs and games, traditionally used to caution about looming threats. In her collection, Torishéju employs this theme to explore the concept of beauty as a distraction – a captivating spectacle that entices the observer while simultaneously distorting their perception.
SPRING SUMMER 2024 COLLECTIONS
The standout pieces in the collection are characterized by Torishéju’s innovative approach to layering and draping fabrics, resulting in an aura of otherworldly luxury. Materials ranging from silk to cotton drill are artfully assembled, creating a dense and voluminous texture that seems ready to envelop anyone who dares to approach.
In her creative process, Torishéju has transformed these fundamental materials into intriguing, albeit unfamiliar, forms. These irregular shapes disrupt traditional silhouettes, introducing an unexpected array of textures and surfaces. Classic Western suiting is reimagined, with heavyweight wool jackets turned inside-out to reveal silk linings and padded shoulders, effectively deconstructing and laying bare their foundational elements. This theme of inversion continues as these distinct “horned” jackets evolve into flowing evening gowns and halter aprons.
In another nod to her cultural heritage, Torishéju introduces a series of “wrap” attire, including skirts, tops, and gowns, drawing inspiration from the effortless elegance of Nigerian lappa clothing. Tied casually at the hips or lower back, these pieces effortlessly capture the relaxed essence of traditional Yorubaland attire, while flaunting Torishéju’s keen attention to intricate detailing.
The Torishéju Spring Summer 2024 collection conjures up an enchanting narrative: a group of ethereal courtiers attending a grand ball set a hundred years into the future. The attire crafted by Torishéju becomes the dress code for this futuristic event, with attendees appearing almost illusory in their uniquely crafted outfits, reminiscent of figures poised on the brink of a blazing inferno.
