How does it feel to be a part of such a groundbreaking LGBTQ+ series like Heartstopper? – Brilliant and overwhelming. The happiness involved in the making of this world has spilled into the rest of my life too – the optimism is so infectious.
Your character Darcy became a quick fan favorite in the first season. What aspects of Darcy’s character resonated with you the most, and how did you prepare for the role? – Darcy is brilliant. She’s like an imaginary friend that I would’ve created in my head as a kid. Her lack of respect for authority really resonates with me and both myself and Darcy value freedom a lot. Rules and social norms didn’t come easy to me as a kid either, so I just looked at that when I came to play her. She’s what I like to think I’d have been like at 16 if I’d had such wonderful friends as her.
Fear of saying the wrong thing or upsetting someone has held me back a lot but I realise respect is such a small thing to ask for.
Heartstopper has been praised for its authentic representation and positive impact on LGBTQ+ communities. How important do you think it is for mainstream media to portray diverse and inclusive stories like this? – Representation is brilliant, but is only part of it. LGBT people are going to generate clicks and views whether its outpourings of love or outrage and people have a responsibility to protect us from the firing line. However this show is so gentle and loving with its representation. It makes me feel happy to be myself and I can’t overstate how important that feeling is.
As a non-binary actor, how do you navigate the entertainment industry and ensure that your identity is respected and represented accurately in your roles? – It is strange, honestly. As I get more familiar with the industry and become more confident in seeing myself how I’d like to be represented, I’ve found that people will listen if I just speak up for myself. Fear of saying the wrong thing or upsetting someone has held me back a lot but I realise respect is such a small thing to ask for.

Can you share any memorable behind-the-scenes moments or experiences while filming Heartstopper that left a lasting impression on you? – I really enjoyed when we filmed in Paris. The cast went vintage shopping together and Leila found some bomber jackets that were so cute and I got a long green coat. There wasn’t much free time in Paris but we spent it together which was lovely.
With the show’s renewal for two more seasons, what can fans expect from Darcy’s character arc in the next season? – Darcy grows up a little, which is nice. She isn’t always the most considerate so I’m really happy when she takes time to notice how the people around her are feeling. Darcy’s zest for life and love is so brilliant and it really shows as the show goes on.
Heartstopper has been celebrated for its positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships. How do you think the series contributes to fostering a more inclusive and accepting society? – I’ve seen some impact on young people and their families and I think that’s amazing. It can be a really educational and emotive introduction to LGBT topics. The crew, the team and especially the boys have made something so comfortable and genuine.
Social media has become a significant platform for artists and actors to connect with their audience. How do you use your social media presence to engage with your fans and advocate for causes important to you? – I use social media in a very different way than I used to. Everything I post feels permanent so I need to be more conscientious and it took me a while to understand that I’m not just interacting with my friends but also younger fans of the show.
As I get more familiar with the industry and become more confident in seeing myself how I’d like to be represented, I’ve found that people will listen if I just speak up for myself.
How do you spend your free time? – Playing Splatoon, going to university parties, watching YouTube video essays.
What’s the most recent movie that made you cry? – How To Have sex from Molly Manning Walker.
What’s next for you? Are there any new acting projects on the horizon? – I’m crocheting a pair of gloves, so that takes precedence. But I am currently filming S3 of the show and I’m aiming to get a bit more formal acting knowledge so I can stick around!
