Nestled in the heart of Brixen, South Tyrol’s oldest town, the Lasserhaus Art Hotel harmoniously blends history and contemporary luxury. This 15th-century aristocratic residence, meticulously restored by the acclaimed architectural duo Vudafieri-Saverino Partners, has been transformed into a 4-star superior Art Hotel. The result is a seamless integration of ancient charm with modern elegance, making it a unique destination for art and history enthusiasts alike.

HOTELS

Brixen, known for its medieval ambiance and rich cultural heritage, provides the perfect backdrop for this extraordinary hotel. The town’s cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and scenic mountain views contribute to an atmosphere that feels both timeless and vibrant. Against this backdrop, Lasserhaus emerges as a beacon of sophisticated hospitality, where every detail has been considered to create a unique and memorable experience.

Vudafieri-Saverino Partners approached this project with a deep respect for the building’s historical significance and an innovative vision for its future. The transformation honors the original structure while introducing contemporary elements that enhance its beauty and functionality. This delicate balance between past and present is evident in every aspect of the hotel, from its architectural details to its curated art collection.

A Historical Gem

Upon entering the Lasserhaus, guests are greeted by a space rich with memories and artistry. The lobby, adorned with family heirlooms and classical paintings, sets the tone for the entire experience. Soft lighting creates a warm and inviting ambiance, making visitors feel immediately at home. This initial impression is just the beginning of a journey through time and art that the hotel offers.

The hotel boasts ten exquisitely designed bedrooms, including three suites, six doubles, and a single room, each offering a cozy and sophisticated ambiance. Each room is a blend of historical elements and modern luxury. The careful restoration respects the historical essence of the building while introducing contemporary design elements, creating a perfect balance between old and new. The rooms feature natural materials like larch and beech wood, brass details, and soft velvet surfaces, which create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Custom-designed furniture and restored Tyrolean pieces add character to the rooms, while thoughtful lighting design ensures a cozy ambiance throughout. The palette, inspired by the autumn woods and mountains, enhances the serene and luxurious feel of the spaces. The attention to detail in each room ensures that guests experience both comfort and a sense of history during their stay.

Art Meets Hospitality

The Faller family’s extensive collection of classical paintings is thoughtfully displayed throughout the hotel, complemented by contemporary works curated by Stefanie Prieth and Rose Bourdon. This blend of old and new art creates a dynamic and engaging environment, inviting guests to explore the dialogues between different eras and styles. The art collection is integral to the hotel’s identity, transforming it into a living gallery.

Notably, the wine cellar, transformed by digital art pioneer Peter Kogler, and the spa featuring Alexander Wierer’s works, add unique artistic dimensions to the guest experience. Kogler’s psychedelic patterns create unusual spatial depths in the wine cellar, turning it into a space to be explored and experienced. Meanwhile, Wierer’s focus on the progression of time and the transience of the present adds a reflective quality to the spa area.

Artistic incursions can also be found in some of the rooms. For example, Ingrid Hora’s ‘Wall Bars’ offers guests new perspectives and encourages them to give free rein to their ideas. Esther Stocker’s ‘Thoughts and Planets’ installation features ten sculptures that seem to float on the ceiling vault, dissolving fixed points with broken geometries. These artistic touches add layers of meaning and visual interest to the guest experience, making each stay at Lasserhaus a unique journey through art and history.

Design

Vudafieri-Saverino Partners have skillfully redesigned the interiors to reflect both historical features and modern comforts. The use of natural materials like larch and beech wood, brass details, and soft velvet surfaces creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Custom-designed furniture and restored Tyrolean pieces add character to the rooms, while thoughtful lighting design ensures a cozy ambiance throughout.

The palette, inspired by the autumn woods and mountains, enhances the serene and luxurious feel of the spaces. The careful study of color resulted in a palette that includes the green of shiny laminate and the brown tones of brushed larch, as well as the warmer, darker burnt larch. This combination of colors and materials creates a harmonious and visually appealing environment.

Some of the furniture has been salvaged, such as the restored chairs typical of the Tyrolean tradition. However, most of the pieces have been made to the architects’ design. These include wardrobes and partition panels, velvet bedheads with brushed larch sticks and desks, and the panelling behind the beds in minimal elegant strips of wood. This blend of old and new furniture pieces adds to the unique charm of the hotel.

A Cultural Hub

More than just a hotel, Lasserhaus aims to be a cultural hub in Brixen, offering artist residencies and collaborating with cultural institutions to grow its art collection systematically. The contemporary artworks within the hotel are not merely decorative but integral to the environment, fostering a space of dialogue and exchange. This commitment to cultural enrichment makes Lasserhaus a vital part of Brixen’s urban life and hospitality scene.

The curatorial approach to the art project at Lasserhaus emphasizes connection and openness. Art is considered an instrument of relationship, transforming the interiors of the hotel into places of dialogue and exchange. The contemporary artworks thus become an integral part of the environment, creating a subliminal and unobtrusive cultural presence. This approach enriches the guest experience, making art an everyday occurrence that is part of the whole.

The Faller family’s collection, comprising more than 100 works ranging from the 1600s to the mid-20th century, has been carefully curated to create a dialogue between the oldest and most modern works. This curatorial strategy translates the encounter between classical and conceptual exhibition techniques with lightness and elegance. For example, the lift room on the ground floor, known as the ‘patrons’ room’, showcases portraits of couples who formerly owned the estate, playing with the gazes of different characters.

The Lasserhaus Art Hotel is a masterful reinvention of a historical residence, offering guests a unique blend of luxury, comfort, and artistic immersion. With its rich history, stunning art collection, and contemporary design, it provides an unforgettable experience in the picturesque setting of South Tyrol. Whether you are an art lover, a history buff, or simply seeking a luxurious retreat, Lasserhaus promises a stay that is as enriching as it is relaxing.

Whether you are exploring the art-filled hallways, relaxing in the luxurious rooms, or enjoying the scenic views of Brixen, Lasserhaus offers an experience that is both timeless and contemporary.
