For the SS25 season, MELITTA BAUMEISTER took her signature sculptural aesthetic to new heights, debuting her collection on the runway for the first time. Known for her exploration of bold volumes and expressive silhouettes, Baumeister’s approach reframes the body, creating a space that challenges conventional ideas of beauty and fit. This season, the designer emphasized inclusivity by casting models representing a range of ethnicities, abilities, body types, and ages.
The collection drew inspiration from bodies in motion, exploring how speed can shape and transform both the body and the clothing it wears. Baumeister’s fascination with movement took center stage, and to further emphasize this theme, she invited contemporary ballet dancers to preface the show with a performance that mirrored the fluidity and grace of her garments. Paralympian sprinter and advocate for women athletes with disabilities, Scout Bassett, was given the honor of opening the show, embodying the strength and dynamism Baumeister sought to convey.
Baumeister’s design process remains deeply rooted in her sculptural approach, using a combination of innovative materials and experimental techniques. From draping fabric directly onto the body to incorporating uncommon elements like foam in place of traditional boning, her work exemplifies curiosity. Her knowledge of craftsmanship grounds her experimentation, ensuring that each piece is both visually striking and impeccably constructed.
One of the standout features of the collection was Baumeister’s in-house ripple pleating, which added fluidity and flexibility to the garments. This pleating technique allows the pieces to change shape as the wearer moves, enhancing the sense of motion that defined the collection. The ripple effect was showcased in a variety of colors, including black, pink, mustard, and yellow, while the use of foam added structure to the circular shoulders and futuristic sleeves.
Rapper Offset closed the show, making a bold statement with his walk. Reflecting on his experience, he praised Baumeister’s designs for their unique shapes and deceptively lightweight fabrics. “Walking in Melitta’s show was a very beautiful thing. I appreciate Melitta for having me. My favorite thing about the pieces is that the shapes and how the fabrics look heavy but it’s light and very comfortable. It was a dope show overall,” he remarked.
Her collection invites everyone to engage with fashion on their terms, encapsulated in her statement, “You bring the body, we bring the shape.”
