Nike partnered with Tomo Koizumi to reintroduce the Air Superfly, a silhouette that first appeared 25 years ago as a low-profile racing trainer. The collaboration brings Tomo’s signature use of vivid color and sculptural detail to a performance-driven shoe that balances sport and style.
Tomo looked to two central influences in shaping his approach: Japanese manga and the strength of elite women athletes. These references informed a design language that emphasizes femininity while remaining grounded in technical construction. “The Nike Air Superfly is a beautiful canvas for both artistic and athletic expression,” Tomo said, describing his goal to create a versatile silhouette that adapts to different personalities and styling choices.

The re-envisioned Air Superfly arrives with a lenticular upper and tongue logo that shift in color under changing light. A multicolor outsole, accented with green dots that recall early 2000s track spikes, reinforces its racing heritage. Three interchangeable Swooshes add customization: a multicolor ruffle, a black ruffle, and a standard option. Multiple lace sets allow wearers to increase or reduce volume, while Tomo’s logo on the sock liner marks the collaboration.
Nike paired the release with a campaign that features three athletes. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and ten-time world champion, represents speed and longevity at the highest level. Masai Russell, who earned Olympic gold in the 100-meter hurdles in 2024, embodies the next generation of excellence. Arie Aoki, a sprinter from Japan, connects the project to Tomo’s home country and its athletic culture.

Tomo spoke about the connection between these athletes and the collection, noting how their ability to combine strength and expression informed his design. “Athletes like Shelly-Ann redefine what it means to be unapologetically stylish and feminine while also being fiercely strong and performing at the highest level,” he said. That idea of dual expression shaped both the technical and visual choices of the shoe.
The Nike x Tomo Koizumi Air Superfly releases on September 19 at Dover Street Market Ginza and select retailers in Japan. The global launch follows on September 20 through SNKRS and select partners, marking the shoe’s official return with Tomo’s distinct interpretation.
