AKOYA at The Knickerbocker Hotel is Times Square’s best-kept secret, an address you almost want to keep to yourself, but the experience is too remarkable not to share. Shapes as a true rooftop sanctuary that redefines what it means to dine above the city’s electric pulse. Located atop the historic Knickerbocker Hotel, AKOYA is an intimate, 33-seat sushi and cocktail bar that feels like a private club, hidden in plain sight. Step out of the chaos of Times Square below and into a space where you feel like you’re in on Manhattan’s most exclusive secret.

The experience begins with the striking setting: AKOYA sits quietly on the St. Cloud Rooftop, surrounded by the city’s glow yet blissfully removed from the tourist throngs. The ambiance is understated and meticulously designed by LUCID design studio team, known for its hotel and restaurant design projects. Minimalist design lines, selection of textured Élitis wall coverings, and natural materials echo Japanese restraint. Additionally, the 13-seat black granite sushi bar, framed in warm oak, anchors a softly lit dining room that feels both sophisticated and welcoming. Today, AKOYA is a place where time seems to slow, and the energy of Times Square is filtered through a lens of tranquility.

Every detail at Akoya is intentional. From the quality of our nori to the last garnish on a roll, the goal is to offer something pure and exceptional, something that feels quiet and personal, even in the heart of Times Square –  shares Chef Taishi Yamaguchi’

AKOYA is the collaborative vision of two culinary talents: Charlie Palmer, the hotel’s culinary partner and a pioneer of progressive American cuisine; and Sushi Chef Taishi Yamaguchi, whose global expertise brings authenticity and artistry to every plate. As Charlie Palmer puts it, “With Akoya, we’re continuing to elevate the global culinary narrative at The Knickerbocker. It’s a beautiful space that combines the energy of the city with the tradition and finesse of Japanese technique. As a hotel so closely tied to New York’s history, we’re thrilled to bring the innovative vision of Akoya to life.”

The menu is focused and precise, centering on temaki, hand rolls crafted with responsibly sourced seafood and warm, seasonal Japanese rice. Each ingredient is chosen for its quality and provenance, from the crisp nori to the vinegars and oils sourced through Mutual Trading Company. For us the standout dishes include the signature “Akoya” Grilled Oyster with scallion relish and seaweed chiffonade, the Australian Wagyu Tataki hand roll crowned with Platinum Osetra caviar and wasabi aioli, and the Yuzu Cured Scallop with yuzu kosho aioli. Small plates like Spicy Cucumbers with shredded kombu and Roasted Shishito Peppers with togarashi spice offer a fresh, vibrant start, while delicate mochi in matcha, mango, and coconut bring the meal to a gentle close.

Chef Taishi Yamaguchi’s philosophy is evident in every bite: “Every detail at Akoya is intentional. From the quality of our nori to the last garnish on a roll, the goal is to offer something pure and exceptional, something that feels quiet and personal, even in the heart of Times Square.” The staff embodies this ethos, moving with an unobtrusive grace, always ready to share the story behind each dish or guide you through the subtle differences in sake.

Additionally, the beverage list is as thoughtfully curated as the food. The cocktail list bridges Japanese ingredients with a global perspective: the Sakura Spritz blends iichiko shochu, cherry blossom liqueur, and prosecco for a smooth, floral sip; the Miss Hokkaido is a bright, citrus-forward mix of Empress 1908 Gin, Italicus Bergamot Liqueur, St. Germain, lemon, and grapefruit. Sake offerings span Japan, France, Mexico, and Brooklyn, while our strong recommendation also comes with the craft beers and non-alcoholic options like the Zen-sation ensure every palate is considered.

AKOYA’s location on the rooftop of The Knickerbocker speaks for itself,  at the intersection of Broadway and West 42nd, in a building that’s hosted everyone from Enrico Caruso to F. Scott Fitzgerald. What is important, the space is intimate, the menu is concise, and the experience is quietly transformative.

AKOYA invites guests every evening from 4:00PM to 10:30PM. Reservations are available via Resy.

Address: Akoya, 6 Times Square (The Knickerbocker), New York, NY 10036
