Stone Island Prototype Research_Series 09 introduces a limited experimental project that places knitwear at the center of the brand’s ongoing research practice. Produced in an edition of 100 pieces, each garment appears in a different color, positioning the series as a study in fabrication, process, and variation. As with all Prototype Research releases, the project presents materials and techniques developed through experimentation that have not entered industrial production.

For the first time within the Prototype Research framework, Stone Island applies its investigative approach to knitwear. The series focuses on air-blown lamination on knit, a newly developed garment construction technology that extends the brand’s established practice of treating knitwear as outerwear.

The project centers on a reversible cotton chenille hooded cardigan. This single garment model functions as the foundation for the entire series, allowing the fabrication process to remain the primary variable. One hundred distinct color treatments range from vivid to subdued tones, including mélange effects.

A waterproof and breathable membrane bonds to the knit layer through a three-dimensional lamination process developed specifically for this project. The technique uses an inflatable mannequin as a working tool. The chenille cardigan is placed over the form, while the ultra-thin HDry membrane sits directly beneath the knit. Hot air inflates the mannequin, allowing the membrane to adhere evenly to the knit surface.

The bonding process introduces subtle surface irregularities as the membrane attaches to the knit. These variations remain visible due to the membrane’s extreme thinness, which preserves the texture, color, and construction of the chenille yarn. The laminated side features zippered pockets, while the knit side includes kangaroo pockets. Each zipper opening is cut by hand after the membrane application, aligning manual intervention with an otherwise technologically driven process.

Prototype Research_Series 09 debuted through a dedicated installation conceived and directed by Ken-Tonio Yamamoto during Milan Fashion Week on January 17, 2026. The installation opened to the public on January 18 and 19, at Stone Island Tortona.

The installation takes inspiration from circular knitting machines. Through disassembly and reconfiguration, industrial components form an Apparatus that represents the creation process of the Prototype. Removed from their original function, these elements operate as an experiential structure that links form and production logic. Threads descend into the Apparatus, referencing the starting point of knitwear, while inflatable elements interpret the air-blown lamination process in spatial terms.

Garments emerge from this system arranged in three concentric rows organized by color. A custom sound installation completes the spatial environment. Following the installation, Stone Island Prototype Research_Series 09 will become available for purchase at select Stone Island stores.
