Pierpaolo Piccioli Reportedly Set to Leave Balenciaga

A new report suggests the designer could exit the house after its October 1 show, bringing his tenure at Balenciaga to an unexpectedly early end.

Pierpaolo Piccioli could be preparing to leave Balenciaga after just over a year as creative director. The industry sources say Piccioli is set to exit the Kering-owned house, with an announcement potentially arriving after Balenciaga presents its next collection on October 1. Balenciaga and Kering have yet to announce his departure publicly, and Piccioli remains listed as the house’s artistic director.

NEWS

The possibility of such a short tenure immediately raises questions around the speed at which major luxury houses now expect a new creative appointment to produce results. Piccioli arrived at Balenciaga in July 2025 following 25 years at Valentino, where his work became closely associated with couture, color and an expressive approach to volume. At Balenciaga, he inherited a house that had spent the previous decade under Demna, who left to take over Gucci.

Piccioli approached Balenciaga through Cristóbal Balenciaga’s archive and his own understanding of couture. His debut brought architectural shapes into conversation with softer construction and the codes that had defined his previous work. In July 2026, he presented his first haute couture collection for the house, continuing his examination of volume through capes, expansive gowns and feathered pieces.

If the report proves accurate, however, that creative direction may have had little time to develop.

The potential departure is attributed to commercial concerns, citing industry sources who claim Piccioli’s couture-oriented direction has failed to generate the sales Kering CEO Luca de Meo expected. The publication also reports a sharp decline in Balenciaga’s menswear revenue during his tenure. Kering has not publicly confirmed those specific claims.

The report arrives during another difficult period for the luxury sector. Reuters reported this week that the slowdown facing major groups has intensified, with inflation and geopolitical instability placing further pressure on consumer spending. Kering shares have erased the gains recorded after de Meo took over as CEO a year ago, while luxury companies continue competing for a smaller group of high-spending customers.

That environment gives the Piccioli report wider significance. Creative directors increasingly operate alongside immediate commercial expectations, even when redefining a major house requires several seasons. A departure after roughly a year would leave only a small body of work through which to understand what Piccioli intended for Balenciaga.

For now, the situation remains unconfirmed. Piccioli continues to serve as Balenciaga’s artistic director, and the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode lists the house’s next runway show for October 1 at 2 p.m. in Paris.

The show now arrives under very different circumstances. What was expected to provide another chapter in Piccioli’s developing Balenciaga vocabulary could instead become one of the final collections of his brief tenure.
