If you are experiencing walking-related issues, such as you feel pain after a walking session, the first thing that you should check is your posture, as well as how you carry your shoulders and head. If you have poor posture, you might want to do something about it and improve it.

Good walking posture can make you look leaner and longer. Aside from that, it will not cost you anything. All you need to do is to practice the following ways:

1. Consider Using Supportive Footwear

When it comes to footwear, you should choose shoes that offer an ampler padding that will help you hold yourself upright. Moreover, ensure that your chosen pair of footwear has a good arch support.

Remember that good posture begins with your feet. So, avoid shoes with high heels, and add cushioned insoles to your shoes if you will be standing for long periods of time. If you have flat feet and you enjoy running, choose a pair of running shoes that will keep your natural gait and won’t make your motions awkward and stiff.

2. Use The Wall To Teach Yourself The Right Body Posture

You can train your walk and posture through standing with your back against the wall. Lean on the wall with your back, butt, and shoulders. Your heels must be two to four inches away from the wall. Then, slide your hands on the wall upwards. You may hold this position as long as you can, and, if possible, do this regularly. This will help you correct your spine position and may encourage proper body curve. The best thing about this simple exercise is that you may do it at home or at work.

3. Walk As If You Have Books On Your Head

If you want to correct your posture and walk, you can imagine having books on your head when walking. This will keep your back straight and head up. If you are having trouble imagining it, try doing it with real books for several minutes. Make sure that you have a good standing posture as you move. Keep your shoulders back, head up, eyes looking straight ahead, and chest out while walking. However, do not push your head forward. This will help you improve proper posture, which is one of the ways to be healthier.

4. Do Deep Abdominal Stretching To Improve Your Core Muscles

You can do this by lying on your back with legs bent to 90 degrees and your feet on the floor. Then, pull your belly button up to your chest and try to hold this position for about ten seconds. The reason why this exercise can improve your posture is because the core muscles are important for supporting your posture. Therefore, if you work more on your core muscles, you will never have a problem with maintaining a good posture. Also, while exercising, you should breathe normally as you’re training your core to maintain this position while doing various activities daily.

5. Consider Strength Training To Train Muscles For Better Posture

The muscles across your shoulders and upper back have something to do with your posture. To maintain good posture, you should do exercises to strengthen such muscles. You can do strength exercises with or without the use of weights. You may begin through squaring your posture. Your arms should be extended straight in front of you with palms up. Then, bend your forearms to your shoulders and try to touch your shoulder blades with your fingers. You can do this regularly to train your muscles and achieve good posture.

Why Does Good Posture Matter?

Bad posture will just make your body suffer from unnecessary aches. Good posture, on the other hand, can help you be more fit. It can stimulate the healing and recovery part of your nervous system, which lessens the release of stress hormones. Moreover, good posture also promotes the release, repair, and growth of hormones, like testosterone. It has strong effects on breathing. This is why you must always aim to maintain a good posture whenever you are standing, walking, or doing any activity.

Conclusion

Proper posture can help you lessen abnormal wear and tear on your joint surfaces, which may sometimes result in arthritis. It can also lessen stress on your body ligaments that are connected to the spinal joints. Having a good posture may also prevent your body from developing any abnormal permanent position that can lead to constricted nerves and blood vessels, as well as spinal disk problems.

Although correcting posture may be a bit difficult, not to mention awkward, at first, especially if you’re already used to your everyday posture, good posture can make a difference to your overall health condition. You only need to practice those tips above and good posture will just naturally happen to you.
