Rolls-Royce Celebrates 60 Years of Goldfinger

Marking six decades of Goldfinger, this special edition Phantom honors the film with lavish touches and design innovation.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the iconic James Bond film Goldfinger, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled an extraordinary one-of-one Phantom Extended. Paying tribute to the villain Auric Goldfinger’s 1937 Phantom III Sedanca de Ville, this bespoke masterpiece merges the world of film with luxury craftsmanship, honoring one of Rolls-Royce’s twelve appearances in the 007 franchise.

This unique creation draws inspiration directly from the plot and aesthetic of the 1964 film. The design celebrates the interplay between luxury and intrigue, with a hidden 18-carat gold bar encased in the center console, a nod to Auric Goldfinger’s obsession with the precious metal. The bespoke build took three years to perfect, with details referencing the film’s iconic scenes, from the Furka Pass chase to 007’s first encounter with Goldfinger on the golf course.

The exterior of the Phantom Goldfinger echoes the original yellow and black two-tone scheme of Goldfinger’s 1937 Sedanca de Ville. Rolls-Royce artisans meticulously matched the vintage hue while integrating modern craftsmanship through 21-inch disc wheels and a black wrap that accentuates the car’s sleek silhouette. The Spirit of Ecstasy emblem on the hood features an innovative finish that hints at hidden gold beneath the silver surface, a subtle reference to the smuggling plot from the film.

Inside, Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke Collective has transformed the Phantom into a playground of gold-infused design elements. The center console houses an illuminated 18-carat gold bar shaped like a Phantom ‘Speedform,’ while gold accents adorn the air vents, glovebox, and speaker frets, creating an atmosphere of subtle extravagance. The glovebox even features Auric Goldfinger’s iconic line: “This is Gold, Mr. Bond. All my life, I’ve been in love with its colour, its brilliance, its divine heaviness.”

One of the most intricate features is the Furka Pass Gallery, a three-dimensional artwork installed across the dashboard. The map traces the contours of the legendary road where Bond followed Goldfinger in the film. It took a year of development and ten prototypes to perfect this piece, which combines darkened stainless steel with gold inlays, creating a visual journey through the Swiss Alps.

Adding to the cinematic experience, the Starlight Headliner replicates the night sky over the Furka Pass as it appeared on July 11, 1964, the final day of filming. The headliner includes 719 stars glowing in gold tones, along with eight shooting stars, all placed by hand.

Meanwhile, the Royal Walnut picnic tables feature an intricate 22-carat gold inlay depicting a fictional map of Fort Knox, the site of Goldfinger’s plot in the film. Developed through six months of meticulous craftsmanship, the design incorporates key locations from the film, such as Gold Vault Road and Bullion Boulevard.

The bespoke craftsmanship continues in the boot, where a gold-plated putter is mounted on the underside of the lid, referencing Goldfinger’s signature golf club. The putter, complete with an ‘AG’ monogram, mirrors the one used during Goldfinger’s first encounter with Bond at Stoke Park. A 007 logo projection gadget activates when the boot is opened, subtly acknowledging Bond’s use of a tracking device in the original film.

Even the umbrellas tucked into the rear doors pay tribute to the Goldfinger story, finished in vibrant harlequin colors inspired by the umbrella loaded into the original Phantom III by Oddjob, Goldfinger’s loyal henchman. The car’s license plate, ‘AU 1,’ referencing the chemical symbol for gold, has also been secured for this one-off creation.

Now delivered to a private collector in England, the Phantom Goldfinger exemplifies Rolls-Royce’s commitment to bespoke luxury. “This project allowed our creative team to explore the boundaries of imagination,” said Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “It is a testament to collaboration, showcasing the extraordinary ability of our designers, engineers, and craftspeople.”

As Nick Rhodes, Bespoke Designer at Rolls-Royce, reflects, “Bringing Phantom Goldfinger to life was one of our greatest creative journeys. This collector’s piece is an exquisite demonstration of bespoke craftsmanship, honoring the film’s most memorable moments while adding a new chapter to an enduring story.”

The Phantom Goldfinger stands as an extraordinary tribute to both the legacy of Goldfinger and the craftsmanship of Rolls-Royce, embodying the essence of cinematic luxury at its finest.
