Phillip Lim has announced his departure as Creative Director of 3.1 Phillip Lim, marking the end of an era for the brand he co-founded with Wen Zhou in 2005. Lim’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, unveiled at New York Fashion Week this past September, celebrated the brand’s 20th anniversary and now serves as his final creative vision for the label.

In a heartfelt statement released to WWD, Lim and Zhou expressed mutual admiration for their two-decade partnership, stating, “It is with great respect and gratitude for each other and our long partnership that we have decided to part ways at 3.1 Phillip Lim. As the brand moves into a new chapter, we are so proud of what we have built and the strength of genuine community around us.” The two underscored the brand’s commitment to remaining independent while fostering creativity, responsibility, and collaboration.

Wen Zhou will continue as CEO and sole proprietor of 3.1 Phillip Lim, though no successor has yet been announced for the creative director role. The brand’s evolution over the years reflects its founders’ original vision: to create meaningful, accessible fashion within the high-quality contemporary market. Known for its versatile offerings from tailoring to accessories, the brand has cultivated a devoted following through its refined yet attainable designs.

In response to challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Lim expanded his creative pursuits beyond traditional collections, notably designing a line of “New York Tougher Than Ever” T-shirts to support his community during the crisis. Lim also co-founded the House of Slay, alongside Prabal Gurung, Laura Kim, Tina Leung, and Ezra Williams, to raise awareness against anti-Asian discrimination, showcasing his commitment to social issues and inclusive representation within the fashion industry.

With Wen Zhou steering the brand’s next phase, the question of Lim’s successor and the brand’s future creative direction remains open. As 3.1 Phillip Lim embarks on its next chapter, it does so with a legacy of independent spirit, collaboration, and social awareness that defined Lim’s tenure.
