The series takes its foundation from Peter Shaffer’s acclaimed stage play and receives a new adaptation by Joe Barton (Black Doves, Giri/Haji, The Lazarus Project). Structured as a five-part drama, Amadeus reimagines Mozart’s rise and fall while exploring the rivalries, obsessions, and relationships that defined his short life.

The story begins with Mozart at twenty-five. No longer viewed as a child prodigy, he arrives in 18th-century Vienna searching for creative freedom. This Vienna serves as the setting where Mozart’s brilliance flourishes against a backdrop of suspicion and personal turmoil. It is here that his life intersects with Constanze Weber, who will become his loyal partner, and Antonio Salieri, the court composer whose faith and talent face direct challenge from Mozart’s arrival.

As Mozart’s reputation grows, fueled by both his genius and the controversies that surround him, Salieri feels consumed by jealousy. He perceives Mozart’s extraordinary skill as a divine gift, one that undermines his own devotion and belief in God. What begins as professional rivalry intensifies into obsession, creating a narrative that extends for three decades. This obsession eventually drives Salieri to confess to murder while attempting to tie his legacy to Mozart’s in a desperate act of control.
The limited series will premiere later this year on Sky and NOW. By revisiting Shaffer’s work and presenting it in a contemporary television format, Amadeus promises a retelling that combines historical drama with psychological intensity, inviting viewers into the life of one of history’s most complex figures.
