Alphabet City has a new contender for your attention, and it’s not what you’d expect. Located in the East Village, Oddball is a newly opened cocktail bar that defies the typical formula, where design takes center stage, cocktails are genuinely innovative, and the food? The food will make you rethink everything you assumed about bar menus.
We walked in expecting a quick drink. We left already planning our return.
Space That Demands a Second Look
Oddball is an experience designed down to the last detail. The brainchild of Danny Taylor (the creative force behind House Under Magic and Eavesdrop), this 1,100-square-foot space is a masterclass in immersive design. Taylor and his team specialize in environments that engage all the senses, including audio design, and it shows. The result is a room that feels alive without ever overwhelming you.
RESTAURANT REVIEWS
The aesthetic pulls from an unexpected mix: retro-futurism, 1970s cosmic nostalgia, late-night diner Americana, Memphis Group geometry, and classic sci-fi cinema. It sounds like a lot. It works beautifully. Bold solids clash with contrasting textures. Geometric forms play against organic materials. The space is playful, visually rich, and deeply considered.
Materials were chosen for both look and feel. Burl wood brings swirling, natural warmth. Volcanic stone grounds the room with raw, elemental texture. Brushed aluminum adds sleek, retro-futuristic edge. Soft primary colors energize the space during daylight hours and shift to a cozy, intimate glow as night falls. These elements carry across tables, banquettes, and custom light fixtures, tying everything together and rewarding those who take a closer look.

Furthermore, the layout maximizes seating without sacrificing comfort. Booths and banquettes are paired with slim dividers that keep sightlines open, creating a sense of intimacy without isolation. Lighting and sound were designed with equal care, custom pendants and zone-specific audio keep the atmosphere lively but never jarring. Even the staff uniforms echo the interior palette: black shirts layered over colored tees, cohesive but approachable.
Cocktails That Actually Surprise
In a city saturated with craft cocktail programs, Oddball manages to stand out. The drinks are fresh, inventive, and executed with precision. Our standout: the Phantom Limb, a cocktail that delivers complexity without pretension, balanced and memorable in equal measure.
What strikes you immediately is the creativity. These aren’t riffs on classics for the sake of novelty. Each drink feels intentional, designed to complement the space and the food program. The bartenders clearly know their craft, and the menu reflects a team that’s thinking beyond the shaker.
The Food Will Change Your Mind
Here’s where Oddball truly surprised us. Cocktail bars with food programs are common enough. Cocktail bars with food this good? Rare.
The menu is small and refined, no sprawling list of afterthought bites. Every dish feels considered, and the execution is impeccable. Our definite favorite: the Seed Goddess Salad, a vibrant, textured bowl that could anchor any farm-to-table restaurant. But the real revelation? Pairing it with the Braised Pork Congee.
This dish alone is worth the trip. Jasmine rice and Alubia Blanca beans are cooked down together, a brilliant collision of rice-and-beans tradition with the silky comfort of congee. Topped with coconut-braised pork, fresh cilantro, and a drizzle of chili oil, it’s warming, complex, and deeply satisfying. The kind of dish you think about for days.
We didn’t expect a cocktail bar to deliver food at this level. Oddball proved us wrong, and now we’re craving a return to explore more of the menu.

Finally, Oddball is the kind of place that makes you fall in love with a neighborhood all over again. It’s a hidden gem in Alphabet City, a destination that rewards curiosity and delivers on every front. The design is immersive without being gimmicky. The cocktails are inventive without being inaccessible. And the food? The food is the real secret weapon. Under Beverage Director Logan Rodriguez, with partners LaTeisha Moore and Philip Reichenberger, Oddball’s cocktail program thrives on playful contrasts. The debut Odd Couples menu brings ingredients into surprising balance, the curated menu brings local producers.
If you’re looking for a reason to head to the East Village, this is it. Oddball just opened, and it already feels like a neighborhood institution in the making.
