The inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar officially opens today in Doha, launching the fair’s first-ever presence in the MENASA region. Presented in partnership with Qatar Sports Investments and QC+, the fair unfolds across Msheireb Downtown Doha through 7 February, positioning Qatar as a new focal point within Art Basel’s global network.

Spanning M7 and the Doha Design District, the fair brings together 87 international exhibitors presenting works by 84 artists, with more than half originating from across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. Departing from the traditional booth format, Art Basel Qatar is structured entirely around solo artist presentations, offering a slower, more concentrated way to encounter contemporary practice. The inaugural edition operates under the theme Becoming, reflecting a format intended to evolve in dialogue with its local context over time.

Artistic direction is led by Vincenzo de Bellis, Art Basel’s Chief Artistic Officer and Global Director of Fairs, alongside Wael Shawky, who serves as Artistic Director of the Qatar debut. Together, they frame the fair as both a commercial platform and a site for sustained artistic engagement, emphasizing depth, focus, and continuity.
On the eve of the VIP Preview Day, Art Basel and Lead Partner Visit Qatar unveiled SONG, a new monumental commission by Jenny Holzer, staged at Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art. The site-responsive work activated the museum through dual projections across its main façade and inner courtyard, accompanied by a one-time choreographed performance of more than 700 drones illuminating the night sky.

Holzer’s commission draws on poetry by Mahmoud Darwish and Nujoom Alghanem, weaving Arabic and English text into public space as light, rhythm, and interruption. Following its debut, SONG remains on view nightly as a projection on the museum’s façade throughout the duration of the fair.

The launch of Art Basel Qatar represents a defining moment in the fair’s 55-year history, responding directly to Qatar’s long-term investment in culture and cultural infrastructure. By embedding itself within Doha’s existing museums, creative districts, and institutions, the new fair establishes a platform designed to connect regional artistic production with Art Basel’s international ecosystem.

Speaking on the occasion, Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani described the fair as a human-centered cultural platform intended to uplift the creativity of the entire region and invite meaningful global exchange. Leaders from Qatar Sports Investments, Visit Qatar, MCH Group, and Art Basel echoed this vision, framing the fair as a long-term, collaborative project rooted in dialogue, openness, and sustained growth.
