The X-Files Returns With a Darker Cut of I Want to Believe

The newly released trailer introduces Vrach Frankenshteyn, an expanded version of the 2008 film arriving on Hulu and Disney+

The X-Files: I Want to Believe returns in a new director’s cut titled The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn. Series creator Chris Carter revisits the 2008 film through an R-rated version that restores the darker horror concept he originally developed. Hulu will release the new cut alongside the original film on August 14, with streaming available through Hulu and Disney+.

MOVIES

Hulu introduced the project with an official trailer that brings David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back as Fox Mulder and Dr. Dana Scully. The footage places greater attention on the film’s abductions, psychic visions and medical horror. Snow-covered locations, operating rooms and fragmented images of human bodies establish a more disturbing tone than the version that reached cinemas in 2008.

The trailer begins with the disappearance of several women before returning to Mulder and Scully years after they left the FBI. A federal agent has vanished, and investigators struggle to find a reliable lead. The case eventually directs them toward Father Joe, a disgraced former priest who claims to receive psychic visions connected to the crimes.

Mulder considers the possibility that Father Joe can guide the investigation, while Scully questions both the priest’s claims and the consequences of returning to their former work. Their disagreement revives a familiar part of their partnership: Mulder searches for explanations outside conventional logic, while Scully demands evidence. As the investigation develops, the case leads them toward medical experiments and a plan involving the reconstruction of a human body.

Carter and co-writer Frank Spotnitz initially conceived I Want to Believe as what Carter described as a real-life Frankenstein film. Carter said that the completed theatrical edition never fully delivered that concept. Studio requests for a PG-13 release reduced some of its most frightening material and limited the medical horror that shaped the screenplay.

The director described the opportunity to revisit the film as a chance to complete the idea that remained unfinished in 2008. The expanded title, Vrach Frankenshteyn, directly connects the new edition to its Frankenstein inspiration. The director’s cut restores material and reshapes the film around the darker version Carter had intended to release.

Unlike the franchise’s first feature film, The X-Files: Fight the Future, I Want to Believe avoids the main alien conspiracy mythology. Carter and Spotnitz structured the story as a standalone investigation closer to the television series’ individual cases. The plot focuses on human actions, unexplained perception and the ethical limits of medicine.

The film also stars Billy Connolly as Father Joe, Amanda Peet as FBI agent Dakota Whitney, Alvin “Xzibit” Joiner as agent Mosley Drummy and Callum Keith Rennie as Janke Dacyshyn. Mitch Pileggi returns as Walter Skinner.

The director’s cut arrives as The X-Files prepares to return with a new series from Ryan Coogler. Coogler will write and direct the pilot, which follows two new FBI agents assigned to a long-closed division that investigates unexplained phenomena. Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel will lead the cast as original characters instead of new versions of Mulder and Scully. Chris Carter will serve as an executive producer, while Jennifer Yale will oversee the series. Hulu has yet to announce a premiere date. Gillian Anderson has expressed support for the project, though neither Anderson nor David Duchovny has received confirmation for an appearance.

The official trailer presents Vrach Frankenshteyn as a new way to experience a familiar case, with its horror elements restored and its central medical experiment placed in clearer view. The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn begins streaming on Hulu and Disney+ on August 14.
