How to Turn Your Home Office into a Comfortable and Productive Place

SSENSE GLOBAL

Many people seem to think that there is just no way they will ever be capable of being as productive at home as they are at work. Well, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Of course, you do have to make a few adjustments to make sure that this is the case. Let’s see what you can do to make this a reality.

Read more after the jump:

Find A Good Place

Everyone is different, so what makes you particularly productive may not be true of someone else. As such, you should look at your home office very carefully, and identify the area where you think your desk or work station should be. It could be in a corner, by the door, or even by the window.

Light it Up

Even if you’ve got plenty of natural light coming through the windows, sometimes you may have to leave your blinds down. The ones from Makemyblinds can be an invaluable asset when you’re trying to be very productive, but the world outside doesn’t seem to cooperate. Even if this doesn’t happen, sometimes, you may just have to work early in the mornings or late during the evenings, when the natural light is going to be lacking. As such, you should make sure that there are plenty of sources of artificial light, from ceiling fixtures to desk lamps.

Motivating Touches

When you’re working from home, you get to build your space in any way you wish. This is one of the greatest benefits of your home office, aside, of course, from the fact that you’re able to work in your pajamas. Now, what motivates one person may not motivate other individuals. As such, you should find that particular thing that drives you, and use it to your advantage. Perhaps you’re going to feel particularly motivated if you’ve got pictures of your family on vacation, or maybe you need motivating quotes to get you going. Whatever it is for you, get it, and use it.

Comfortable Chair

If you’re going to spending a great deal of time on your computer, you may as well be sure that you’re comfortable. As such, you should consider purchasing a chair that’s as comfortable as it gets. This doesn’t just include the cushions, but also features like an adjustable height, to ensure that your chair fits as well as possible with your desk.

Keep Things Simple

Lots of clutter in your office is only going to create clutter in your mind. As such, be sure to get rid of anything that is not entirely necessary, so that your space will be as clear and as functional as possible. This way, you’re going to find that you’ll be much more focused when you start working.

Organization Tools

You should be constantly looking for new ways to help you stay as organized as possible. This can mean using something as trivial as a pen holder. Of course, it can also become more complex, such as getting a few shelves or a drawer organizer. Whatever it is that helps you, be sure to get it.

Have Your To-Do List Handy

Ideally, your to-do list should be right in front of you, so that you’ll know at any point throughout the day what you’ve accomplished and what you still have to do. You can have a day planner right on your desk, or a hanging wall planner, if that’s more to your liking. If you’re not really a pen and paper kind of individual, don’t worry! There are plenty of apps that can help you with this.

Temperature Control

This may sound incredibly trivial, but temperature plays a huge role in your ability to focus. If it’s too cold or too hot, all you’re going to be thinking is about that. In some cases, you may not be able to completely control this aspect. However, there are a few things you can do. For starters, if your room is too cold, use a space heater. Also, make sure that you always have blankets and warm sweaters around or even electric blankets. On the other hand, if the room is too hot, make sure you’ve got a fan nearby, and that you’re drinking plenty of cold water.

Incorporate Some Orange

Orange is the color of organization and productivity. You may not like this color, in which case, feel free to disregard this point. However, if you do, consider incorporating a few elements of it into your office. There’s no need for you to turn your whole office into a big bowl of orange, as that may hurt your eyes. However, just a bit can go a long way.

Get Some Green

We mean plants, not money here. Indeed, a Norwegian study found that having desk plants and flowers can help improve rates of attention, keeping individuals more focused on what they were doing.

Your home office is where you’re allowed to express yourself as much as possible, while still being comfortable and productive. We hope that these tips prove to be useful when it comes to creating the ideal working conditions in your own house.
