Menswear Allure of European Old Money Style

Menswear has its core definitions clearly setup, however trends do come and go, however the definition of elegant is dominated with tried out classics for decades. There is a point in menswear when we go back to the styles that evoke the sophistication and understated luxury of European old money. This Spring Summer 2024 menswear season, the spotlight returns to two of the most iconic sports associated with this elite class—yachting and tennis. These sports have not only influenced leisure activities among the affluent but have also significantly shaped contemporary fashion trends, blending tradition with modernity to create a look that is both timeless and fresh.

Yachting Elegance: A Nautical Legacy in Menswear

The influence of yachting on menswear can be traced back to the maritime traditions of European aristocracy, where functionality met finesse. However, today the quintessential yachting attire is not just a nod to nautical aesthetics but also of practical luxury. Key elements include blazers in navy or crisp white, paired with well-fitted slacks or chinos. These pieces are often crafted and knit out of finest materials, from silk to merino wool.

Breton stripes, originally worn by French sailors, have transcended their practical origins to become staples in the wardrobes of the style-conscious. This pattern is not only timeless but also versatile, pairing seamlessly with everything from casual denim to tailored trousers. Footwear, too, plays a crucial role, with boat shoes and loafers rounding out the look, offering both comfort and a touch of elegance suitable for a deck or a dockside soiree.

The Return of Tennis Whites: A Trend Revival Inspired by the Silver Screen

This season, tennis fashion makes a vigorous comeback, invigorated by its depiction in Luca Guadagnino’s film “The Challengers“, starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor. The movie has sparked a renewed interest in classic tennis whites, which symbolize both the sport’s strict heritage and a chic, minimalist aesthetic. The traditional polo shirts, pleated shorts, and crisp, lightweight trousers are emblematic of a refined yet active lifestyle that balances athleticism with grace. If you are on the lookout for a statement tennis core and yachting inspired piece, Izac Men’s Suits are also a great addition to your timeless wardrobe. Brands such as Izac find the perfect balance to mix the European elegance with contemporary menswear.

The resurgence of tennis-inspired fashion is not merely a nostalgic revival but a celebration of clean lines and functional beauty. The color palette remains predominantly white, punctuated with occasional splashes of navy or forest green, maintaining a connection to the sport’s elegant roots while allowing for modern interpretations and styling. Accessories such as headbands, wristbands, and vintage taken tennis sneakers complement the outfits, enhancing the sporty yet sophisticated vibe quickly coined as tennis-core.

Blending Traditions: Modern Interpretations of Old Money Style

The modern adaptation of these styles speaks to a broader trend of revisiting and revitalizing traditional menswear. Today’s designers are weaving the essence of old money style—discreet luxury and a connection to leisurely heritage sports—into contemporary garments. This approach not only honors the past but also makes these styles relevant for today’s fashion-forward man.

Outerwear, such as the timeless trench coat or the structured peacoat, bridges seasonal styles while maintaining a link to the maritime and sporty origins of these looks. Similarly, accessories such as silk scarves, nautical-inspired watches, and classic sunglasses add a layer of old-world charm to any outfit, ensuring that the wearer stands out with a style that is both heritage-infused and distinctly modern. Once again the emphasis for this brands is on materials, sourcing only the highest quality wool and cotton, created in mills crafting the material especially for these menswear brands.

Embracing Sustainability: The New Luxury Standard

An essential aspect of modern menswear, influenced by the principles of old money style, is the focus on sustainability. As today’s consumers become more environmentally conscious, they gravitate towards brands that not only offer style and tradition but also commit to ethical practices and sustainability. This shift mirrors the old money values of longevity and quality over fleeting trends, with an increased emphasis on garments that offer both style and sustainability.

Finally, the return of yachting and tennis superstars on menswear is showing how quickly the fashion industry embraced quite luxury, for many fuelled by TV shows such as Succession, which continues to inspire fashion that is bringing back the classical men’s dressing. As we see a revival of these trends, driven by the mentioned cinematic portrayals and a deeper appreciation of heritage sports, it becomes clear that the blend of tradition with modern design sensibilities is more than just a fashion statement. It is also a massive drive for the fashion industry, bringing to surface European heritage brands. This season, as tennis whites and notes of the Succession style dominate the scene, they bring with them a timeless charm that is sure to prevail in the not easy to shape story of men’s fashion.
