The Untold Secrets of Online Shopping

Tips for better deals and safer purchases

There are 2.6 billion online shoppers, with over 274 million coming from the US. Does everyone know how to get the most out of their online shopping with the untold secrets that people are almost gatekeeping? Probably not. Read on for some of the best-untold secrets of online shopping.

The Psychology of Online Shopping

Understanding the psychology behind online shopping will let you make better choices.

Retailers use different psychological tricks to influence their buying behavior. One common strategy is scarcity, where items are displayed with tags like Only two left in stock! That creates a sense of urgency that forces people to purchase before the item runs out. Well, it doesn’t force them, but there’s a sense of urgency.

Personalized recommendations based on browsing history are another tactic. These suggestions can make you feel like the website understands your preferences, increasing the likelihood of you adding more items to your cart. You might be thinking Google is watching you, and it probably is, because you agreed to terms and conditions across every website you visit that lets it watch you.

Is that always a good thing? No. Sometimes, we agree to websites selling our data to data brokers, who then sell it to companies we don’t know. We’re more at risk of having a phone number hacked or emails tapped into than ever, with hackers using ‘personalized ads’ to entice us into scams. You’d think after so many years on the web, most of us would be well aware of the risks – and, truthfully, we are. But the risks are always evolving, and they’re being honed by people who understand the psychological tricks that get someone who wouldn’t usually fall foul of a trick, to fall.

Now, this isn’t the same as a legitimate site using legitimate techniques to get us to spend a little more – and a little more impulsively. But the basic premise is the same: we can only tackle the issue by understanding the root cause, and what these companies are able to leverage in order to get us to shop till we drop. Knowing these psychological triggers can help you stay conscious and prevent impulse buys.

How You Can Get Better Deals

One of the most appealing aspects of online shopping is how to get a better deal. We’re always looking for a better deal online! Here’s how you can get one:

  • Price Comparison Tools: Honey, camelcamelcamel, and more can track price changes, alerting buyers about good deals.
  • Abandon Your Cart: As strange as this may sound, sometimes leaving items in your cart without finalizing the purchase might cause retailers to send discount codes or other special offers. Just make sure you’ve signed up with an email or phone number, or they won’t know who to send it to.
  • Use a VPN: Depending on where you are, product prices may differ significantly. You could get a bargain if you use a VPN.
  • Shop During Sales Events: Big reductions can be found on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and other major sales days.

Protecting Yourself While Shopping Online

As we mentioned earlier, online shopping isn’t always safe. The following tips will help you remain secure:

  • Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Have strong and unique passwords for all your accounts. Don’t use the same password on different sites, and consider using a password manager. You could use a random password generator, but making sure you’re not writing down all your passwords in an obvious, easily-hacked space. If you really want to feel secure, write them down on paper and keep them in a locked safe or safety deposit box. It may seem extra, but it’s the best way to avoid a worse case scenario.
  • Shop on Secure Websites: Ensure that any website you enter personal details into starts with ‘https://’ and has a padlock icon on the address bar.
  • Beware of Phishing Scams: Be cautious of emails or messages that ask for your personal information or direct you to a website that looks similar to a legitimate retailer.
  • Secure Payment Methods: Wherever possible, use secure payment methods like credit cards or PayPal payment services.

There are so many untold secrets of online shopping. It’s the most preferred way to shop in 2024, but what do you think about what they’re not telling us?
