A Study in Surreal Form by Zhou Chuan and Lan Tanaka

In DSCENE’s Defiance issue, A Study in Surreal Form stages a bold visual experiment where the language of fashion unravels into abstraction. Photographed by Zhou Chuan with creative direction and styling by Lan Tanaka, the editorial reframes the human figure not as a fixed object but as a shifting silhouette, one that bends, folds, and stretches in a sculptural theatre of tension.

Garments no longer obey the contours of the body; instead, they redefine it, distorting proportion and exaggerating gesture. The result is an uncanny elegance, poised between dream and structure, presence and distortion.

What emerges is a study in form, surface, and suggestion. Makeup artist Shinya Kumazaki and hair stylist Asahi Sano, joined by nail artist Moeko Nakamura, sculpt each frame with the same precision as the clothes themselves. The textures, slick, matte, reflective, furry, become part of the composition, blurring lines between body and object.

Assisted by Minori Yuhara, Hanabi, and Se-Ka Taki, the creative team builds a surreal space where model Anastasia (West Management Inc.) becomes both subject and structure. In this editorial, the defiance lies not in shock, but in refusal, to conform to the expected, the symmetrical, the explainable. Instead, the images invite pause, examination, and interpretation, an act of looking, refracted.
