Sofia Coppola is stepping behind the camera once again, this time not for a stylized feature, but for her first-ever documentary. The subject? None other than Marc Jacobs. Titled Marc by Sofia, the film will debut later this summer at the Venice Film Festival, where it will screen out of competition.

Coppola and Jacobs have been close collaborators for decades, their creative chemistry visible across multiple mediums. From Jacobs casting Coppola in campaigns to her direction of his Daisy fragrance ads, their partnership has spanned fashion, film, and personal friendship. Coppola has also collaborated with Jacobs at Louis Vuitton and later on his Heaven by Marc Jacobs line, making her an intimate and well-placed narrator of his story.

While the scope of Marc by Sofia remains under wraps, its announcement marks another milestone in an already eventful year for Coppola. She recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of The Virgin Suicides with a monograph published under her own imprint, Important Flowers, and joined Chanel in chronicling the history of its haute couture through both book and podcast formats.
Jacobs, for his part, presented his Fall 2025 collection at the New York Public Library, reminding the fashion industry that his theatrical instincts and subversive spirit continue to resonate. The collection’s dramatic scale reaffirmed his place as one of New York’s most consistently intriguing designers.
Though it’s not yet known how deeply Marc by Sofia will delve into Jacobs’s personal or professional life, its placement on the Venice lineup instantly marks it as one of the season’s must-watch fashion films. With Coppola’s signature restraint and visual sensitivity, and Jacobs’s multi-decade influence on the industry, the film promises to be a carefully crafted portrait of one of fashion’s most enduring figures.
