Capelle de Menou, a distinguished professor of French civilization, recently delivered an illuminating discourse on the essence of fashion and the unparalleled excellence of couture. Held in the esteemed Grand Amphithéâtre, the gathering attracted an audience of 1,200 students and esteemed spectators, including journalists, photographers, and notable figures like Academy member André Maurois. This event was particularly noteworthy as unveilings of Dior haute couture typically occurred discreetly within the House’s Salons.
Against the backdrop of the majestic allegorical fresco, “Le Bois Sacré” by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, ten of Monsieur Dior’s creations graced the runway to the accompaniment of music. Notably, the iconic “Bar” ensemble, a symbol of the revolutionary New Look, preceded the A suit from the spring-summer 1955 collection, showcasing the remarkable diversity of shapes conceptualized and reinvented by Christian Dior throughout various seasons. Additionally, the audience was privileged to witness a preview of eight looks from the autumn-winter 1955 collection, known as the emblematic “Y” line, courtesy of an exceptional authorization from the Chambre syndicale de la couture.
In the heart of the Galerie Dior, an aura of excitement and enchantment pervaded as each silhouette epitomized the timeless modernity of Dior’s allure. Reproduced with meticulous precision by the series’ costume designer and her team, these iconic pieces were crafted using sketches, fabric samples, and period photographs from Dior Héritage. Moreover, a selection of models from the Dior autumn-winter 1955 collection, including “Soirée de Londres,” “Soirée chez Maxim’s,” and “Soirée de décembre,” graced the runway, serving as virtuoso replicas for the series’ specific needs.
