Frida and Diego: The Last Dream at MoMA – Month Left to Witness

If you’re in New York and haven’t yet made the pilgrimage to MoMA’s third floor, you have until September 12 to experience one of the most arresting exhibitions of the summer. Frida and Diego: The Last Dream is more than a retrospective of Mexico’s two most iconic 20th-century artists. It’s a theatrical immersion into the lives and legacies of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, orchestrated in rare collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera.

LATEST ART COVERAGE

What makes this exhibition singular is the opportunity to see both artists’ bodies of work in direct conversation, something rarely presented with this depth and scale. Rivera’s monumental vision and Kahlo’s unflinching self-portraiture occupy the same space, allowing the full arc of their creative output to reveal itself, not as separate legacies, but as intertwined forces that shaped 20th-century Mexican art. The exhibition occupies the Philip Johnson Galleries in a setting designed by Jon Bausor, whose theatrical hand shapes both the opera production and this visual installation. Walking through, you’re not simply viewing paintings and drawings. You’re entering a world that echoes the artists’ own narratives, their revolutionary fervor, and the turbulent, complicated romance that defined them both.

Their relationship, romantically and creatively entangled from 1928 until Kahlo’s death in 1954, was marked by infidelities, artistic tensions, and a mutual influence that neither could fully escape. The exhibition doesn’t shy from this complexity. Instead, it uses the physical proximity of their works to illuminate what drew them together and what tore them apart, creating a portrait of two artists bound by passion, ambition, and irreconcilable differences.

The opera’s premise is haunting: an aging Rivera summons Kahlo back to life on the Day of the Dead, three years after her passing. That same imaginative logic animates the MoMA installation, collapsing time and presence. For Gabriela Lena Frank’s operatic vision, composed with a libretto by Nilo Cruz and directed by Deborah Colker, this exhibition represents a crowning moment—the visual and theatrical worlds converging to honor two artists whose influence continues to ripple across the visual and performing arts.

For New York residents, there’s an added incentive. UNIQLO Friday Nights offer free admission every Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. (MoMA stays open until 8:30 on Fridays). If you know the permanent collections, Friday evenings are ideal for exploring new work without the weekday crush. One month remains. Make the trip.

MoMA, Floor 3, 3 North, The Philip Johnson Galleries. Through September 12. The Museum of Modern Art is on 11 W 53rd St, New York, NY 10019.
