Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim have revealed You Can See Everything, their previously secret documentary about Elizabeth Holmes. A24 unveiled the film during an unannounced screening at the Telluride Film Festival on September 6, giving audiences their first look at a project that the directors developed largely out of public view over three years. The studio released the first teaser alongside the premiere and confirmed an October theatrical release.

TV

The 174-minute documentary begins 34 days before Holmes reported to federal prison. Holmes invited Fielder, Oppenheim and a small film crew into the home she shared with her partner, Billy Evans, and their children, giving the filmmakers close access during her final weeks of freedom. The project continued for three years as the directors examined Holmes, her family life and the competing versions of her public identity.

Holmes founded Theranos in 2003 and promoted technology that she claimed could perform numerous medical tests using small quantities of blood. Investigations later exposed major problems with the company’s technology and business practices. A jury convicted Holmes in 2022 on four counts connected to defrauding investors, and a judge sentenced her to over 11 years in federal prison. She reported to prison on May 30, 2023.

The teaser immediately establishes an uneasy relationship between Holmes and Fielder. During a conversation at home, Holmes insists that she has no reason to deceive him and tells the filmmaker that she always acts genuinely. Fielder responds with visible skepticism. The exchange sets up one of the documentary’s central tensions: whether the filmmakers can understand the person granting them such unusual access.

That uncertainty became part of the filmmaking process itself. Fielder has said that he still struggles to understand what he experienced while working on the documentary. During a post-screening conversation at Telluride, he described his difficulty making sense of events inside Holmes and Evans’ home even as the crew examined the situation closely. Emma Stone, who starred opposite Fielder in The Curse, moderated the discussion.

The directors also faced difficulties finding people willing to participate because of Holmes’ reputation. As filming continued, the relationship between the production and Holmes’ household grew increasingly complicated. After Holmes entered prison, Evans became the filmmakers’ primary point of contact, changing the access that had defined the project’s opening period. Neither Holmes nor Evans had seen the finished film by the time of its Telluride premiere.

You Can See Everything adds another screen treatment to a case that has already generated documentaries, podcasts and dramatizations. Hulu’s 2022 miniseries The Dropout cast Amanda Seyfried as Holmes, earning the actor both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the performance.

Fielder and Oppenheim take a different route by placing direct access, uncertainty and the filmmaking process inside the story itself. A24 will release You Can See Everything in US theaters in October 2026.
