Netflix brings John Steinbeck’s East of Eden to television on October 1 in a seven-episode adaptation written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan. Florence Pugh leads the cast as Cathy Ames, joined by Mike Faist, Christopher Abbott and Ciarán Hinds in a story following the Trask and Hamilton families as they settle in California’s Salinas Valley.

Kazan approached Steinbeck’s 1952 novel through its combination of family history and personal experience. Steinbeck once described East of Eden as two books in one: the story of his country and the story of himself. Kazan used that idea as a guiding principle while developing the series, aiming for a story that could feel epic in scale while retaining an intimate connection to its characters.
The material also carries a personal connection for Kazan. Her grandfather, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation starring James Dean. His version focused on a smaller section of the novel. Zoe Kazan chose to work with the larger story, giving the series space to spend time with a wider group of characters and generations.
For the role of Cathy Ames, Kazan had one performer in mind. She describes Pugh as the exact actor she wanted for the character and says she never considered an alternative choice. After watching Pugh work for five months, Kazan praised her awareness of the camera and the intensity she brings to her work.
Cathy has generated debate among readers since the novel’s publication, particularly around her motives and nature. Kazan wanted the series to retain the character Steinbeck created while giving her a fully human presence. She drew from material already contained within the novel and used those details to develop Cathy beyond a single archetype.
Pugh’s performance sits within the wider family drama that drives East of Eden. The series follows several generations connected to the Trask and Hamilton families, with Faist, Abbott and Hinds among the actors bringing those characters to the screen. Their lives develop in the Salinas Valley as the story examines what one generation passes to the next.
Inheritance forms one of Kazan’s central concerns in the adaptation. She approaches the families through questions about what people carry from those who came before them and how individuals confront parts of themselves they may struggle to accept. Those ideas connect personal identity with the larger generational structure of Steinbeck’s novel.
