Jordan Brand is releasing the Jordan 11 MCS Space Jam for the 30th anniversary of the film. The cleat keeps the broad mudguard and mid-cut collar of the Air Jordan 11 that Michael Jordan wore as a member of the Tune Squad. Underneath, a molded stud plate makes it a baseball shoe. That change takes you back to an early scene in the movie, when an opposing catcher recognizes Jordan at the plate and starts telling him which pitches are coming. The joke had a real premise. The biggest name in basketball had actually spent a season trying to hit Double-A pitching.

In October 1993, Jordan was 30, had won seven straight NBA scoring titles, and had just led the Chicago Bulls to their third consecutive championship. Then he retired. Four months later, he signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox. He had last played organized baseball in high school and spoke about taking up a sport his father, James, had wanted him to play. After spring training, the White Sox assigned him to the Birmingham Barons, where he made his professional debut in right field under manager Terry Francona.
Jordan went hitless in his first game, got his first hit two days later, and began a 13-game hitting streak. He finished with a .202 average, three home runs, and 30 stolen bases in 127 games, then batted .252 for Scottsdale in the Arizona Fall League. When he returned to the Bulls in March 1995, he wore No. 45 against the Indiana Pacers, the same number he had worn in Birmingham. By the time Space Jam opened in U.S. theaters on November 15, 1996, Jordan had won his fourth NBA title. The movie took audiences back to his time in baseball and gave him a fictional reason to return to the court.
The cleat takes its color from the game between the Tune Squad and the Monstars in Space Jam. Its Lapis palette comes from the Air Jordan 11 “Magic Ball,” which draws on the glowing basketball that holds the NBA players’ stolen talent. The blue-purple finish has a matte, iridescent sheen across the smooth synthetic leather, with dark laces and collar lining. Perforations at the toe and along the sides provide ventilation. A dark foam midsole sits above the matching Lapis stud plate.
The Jordan 11 MCS is part of a wider footwear collection Jordan Brand is releasing for the 30th anniversary of Space Jam. The collection brings back the black Air Jordan 11 Michael Jordan wore in the film, right down to the “Jumpman Jam” tongue label. The “Magic Ball” and “Green Screen” editions pull from the movie’s plot and production, while the Air Jordan 3 Retro and Jordan First 1 carry the theme beyond the 11. Even the golf course gets a pair with the Air Jordan 1 Low Golf Spike “Space Jam.”
