What to Consider Before Going to Fashion School

SSENSE GLOBAL

Before you consider going to fashion school, there is lots of planning to do. Magazine spreads, movies, and high price tags suggest that the world of fashion involves endless glamour and little work. But there’s a lot that goes into creating the next great design and going to fashion school will lead to a career that requires effort and diligence.

It’s fast-paced, so don’t let yourself get blinded by a seemingly glamourous world without taking a look at what it’s really like.

Look at Your Financial Situation

Fashion schools often come with high prices, especially if you want to go to the best one. While career schools and community colleges have a lower price tag, they also don’t give your resume the edge that a well-known one will. When you’re pricing out your future school, make sure you include room and board, tuition, books, and food. This might seem overwhelming but remember you can often find grants and scholarships if you’re a good student. Plus, you should also consider taking out private student loans. That might make the difference between needing to get a job or having time to take advantage of internship opportunities. If you don’t have a degree from a respected school, it’s hard to get employers to take you seriously. Weigh your options carefully. This is your first chance to make a mark on the industry, so look for a school that can back you. Look at how strong your portfolio will be when you graduate and what opportunities you’ll get at the school.

Consider Your Personality

Take a deep breath and evaluate what your personality is like. Are you willing to put in the effort to pull yourself to the top? Fashion requires creativity and dedication, and there isn’t any room for people who aren’t willing to try. You have to be able to take initiative because no one will hand you anything. But that’s also what makes the field so rewarding. Remember that you likely won’t start designing right after graduation, so make sure you can handle both the highs and lows. Strong communication and organizational skills are both vital for success. Ask yourself questions, such as:

  • Is this something I’ve been dreaming of?
  • Can I give up my social life (and sleep)?
  • Am I willing to do whatever it takes to make this a reality?

What to Consider Before Going to Fashion School

Do You Have a Passion for Fashion?

Do you have a sewing machine that you use regularly to create new designs, or is it gathering dust in your closet? If you want to succeed, you need to live, breathe, and dream of fashion. If you don’t like to come up with new pieces, you may want to reconsider your choice of career.

Consider Your Natural Talent

You can learn about fashion, but you have to have a natural sense or talent. This isn’t like grade school where everyone received a participation reward. If you don’t have at least some natural ability, you won’t get a trophy. You can mold and shape raw talent to fit your brand, but that’s not necessarily something you can learn.
