Located along the coastline of Dhërmi, Albania, Red Sol Resort by Bofill Taller de Arquitectura takes on the unique challenge of designing within an untamed landscape. The Albanian Riviera, defined by jagged rock formations, steep mountainsides, and dense clusters of pine and cypress trees, demands an approach that respects its natural dynamism. Rather than imposing a rigid structure, the architects overlay a fine grid, a “reticulum,” onto the terrain, providing a framework for organizing the resort without overpowering its surroundings.
ARCHITECTURE
From an aerial perspective, the resort presents itself as a series of structured squares, methodically arranged to balance built and open space. However, in section, the architectural composition becomes more fluid, shifting in height as it navigates the terrain. This adaptable configuration allows for diverse spatial experiences, accommodating hotel pavilions, apartments, and private villas that gradually cascade towards the water. The zigzagging movement of the resort mirrors the undulating contours of the mountains, reinforcing a visual and structural connection between architecture and environment.

Materiality plays a crucial role in embedding Red Sol Resort within its setting. Earth-toned facades reflect the surrounding rock formations, lending a sense of permanence to the structure. The resort’s layout, reminiscent of a fortress, emphasizes a strong communal presence while maintaining moments of solitude. Exterior staircases, bridges, and elevated walkways interlace the pavilions, creating an interconnected system that encourages movement and discovery. From a distance, the ensemble appears castellated, a nod to historical forms reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.

Within this network of pathways, pools and patios emerge as focal points, offering guests moments of tranquility amidst the architectural rigor. Thoughtfully placed viewpoints extend out to the sea, blurring the boundaries between built space and natural expanse. These elements foster both intimate reflection and social interaction, ensuring that the resort remains a living entity rather than a static construct.

At its core, Red Sol Resort is an exploration of balance, between order and organic growth, structure and landscape, solitude and shared experience. By embracing the complexities of the Albanian Riviera rather than attempting to tame them, Bofill Taller de Arquitectura has crafted a resort that feels less like an intervention and more like an evolution of its environment. The result is an architectural composition that is as much a part of the land as the mountains and sea that define it.
