Gentle Monster has never played by the rules, and for their latest collaboration with Bratz, the eyewear innovator has rewritten them entirely. On May 29, 2025, DSCENE Magazine was on-site for an exclusive preview of the Los Angeles pop-up, a surreal convergence of tech, toys, and eyewear futurism that unfolded like a live-action portal into a Bratz-coded dimension. Captured through the lens of photographer Kevin Roldan, our coverage offers a close look at a space where plasticity meets precision.

The Pocket Collection takes Gentle Monster’s reputation for shape-shifting eyewear a step further with 21 foldable designs engineered to collapse into palm-sized pouches. A standout among them is the Bratz collab piece, a miniature, attitude-packed model that’s as transportable as it is cheeky. For the Los Angeles launch, the brand built a supersized playground: a colossal Bratz doll sculpture greeted visitors, surrounded by displays of limited-edition dolls sporting the foldable shades.

Part retail space, part sci-fi installation, the LA pop-up unfolded across a sleek, tech-forward interior where each display case doubled as an aesthetic experiment. Sculptural doll figures in custom Bratz x Gentle Monster sunglasses lined illuminated platforms, while curated shelving revealed the intricate construction of the Pocket Collection’s lightweight but resilient frames. Every corner of the space felt tuned to a specific frequency, somewhere between speculative fiction and glam nostalgia.

While the global campaign stars Karina of Aespa in an uncanny, post-human visual narrative, complete with a metallic robotic limb and cyborg coolness, the Los Angeles pop-up grounded the concept in physical experience. Each pair of glasses was stowed in a custom egg pouch, lending an organic contrast to their engineered core. The duality between play and precision ran through every design detail, from reflective black lenses to sculptural burgundy silhouettes.

Limited to Los Angeles, Seoul, Shanghai, and Bangkok, the Gentle Monster x Bratz pop-ups are world-building exercises. And in LA, that world is a cartoon technopolis brought to life. The only way to access the exclusive Bratz dolls is through a purchase from the Pocket Collection, making the collectible angle both a throwback and a strategic reward for early adopters.

The Gentle Monster x Bratz Pocket Collection will remain a limited-run experience, but its ideas, portability, play, precision, point toward a larger design direction. For those who visited the LA preview, it felt less like shopping and more like stumbling into a prototype of what retail could become. A place where fantasy gets folded into your pocket and taken into the unknown.
