This year, the legacy of Jean Prouvé continues with the release of the Antony Limited Edition 2025, a refined reissue of one of the French designer’s final and most iconic furniture pieces. Produced by Vitra, the chair is available only until December 2025 and comes with a consecutively numbered label, marking its place in design history.

Originally conceived in the early 1950s for the Cité Universitaire in Antony near Paris, the chair was born from a competition that saw Ateliers Jean Prouvé selected to furnish Europe’s largest student residence at the time. With its bold silhouette and engineering precision, the Antony chair quickly transcended its utilitarian origins and found a home in offices, waiting areas, and private interiors.
The 2025 edition is a faithful tribute to Prouvé’s original vision, featuring a gracefully curved seat shell crafted from European pine, a departure from the original material that highlights the chair’s sculptural lines with a richly grained surface. The wood is treated with a light wax finish that enhances the natural texture without compromising the design’s functional intent.
Structurally, the chair retains the same ingenuity that made it a technical marvel in the post-war design landscape. A tubular metal brace connects the legs for added stability, while sheet metal brackets support the seat shell with minimal visual interruption. This limited edition brings back the original Rouge Corsaire powder-coated finish, an archival Prouvé colour that underscores the design’s industrial elegance.
Antony holds a unique place in the Vitra Design Museum Collection. It was the very first Prouvé piece acquired by Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra, during a visit to Paris in 1984. That moment sparked a deeper exploration into Prouvé’s work and ultimately led to a long-term collaboration with his family. Since 2000, Vitra has produced a curated selection of his designs, contributing to renewed global interest in Prouvé’s architectural and furniture innovations.
This special edition release also pays homage to the 2006 Vitra Design Museum exhibition Jean Prouvé: The Poetics of the Technical Object, which presented highlights from the museum’s growing collection and introduced a new generation to Prouvé’s design philosophy.
