Project: The Klinik Hair Salon
Designed by Block Architecture
Location: London, England
Structural Engineer: Price & Myers
Services Engineer: Furness Green
Project Area: 67 sqm
Project Year: 2009
Website: www.blockarchitecture.com
The Klinik is a hair salon in Clerkenwell, East London, and is one of Block’s earliest works. Influence was drawn from medical environments to create a pure utilitarian space based around self-consciousness and vanity. CCTV cameras were positioned above each chair with monitors below each mirror. The waiting bench is a hybrid of the psychiatrist’s chaise-longue and a generic hospital bed, describing the process as either a monthly discussion with your ‘therapist’ or as a sterile and detached cosmetic operation.
