Can Smart Glasses Ever Be Fashionable?

By incorporating fashion-forward designs and trendy styles, smart glasses become more appealing and approachable to a broader range of consumers.

Smart glasses have been gaining popularity in recent years as wearable technology advances. In fact, Cision PR Newswire reports that the smart glasses market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.50% by 2030. Despite the promising capabilities of smart glasses, many are still hesitant to embrace this technology, mainly because they are not seen as fashionable or stylish.

As such, below are reasons why the fashion aspect of this technology should not be ignored and how a few brands have begun to understand this barrier to adoption through their recent developments.

Why fashion and style matter for smart glasses

In the past, smart glasses were often associated with unattractive designs that made wearers stand out for all the wrong reasons. It makes it difficult for smart glasses to get mainstream acceptance, as people did not want to wear clunky tech devices on their faces. As such, earlier iterations like Google Glass largely flopped.

The aesthetics and design of a product should never be undervalued, as it can significantly impact its functionality and usability. According to a study entitled The Effects of Innovative Visual Design on Consumer Attitude, user-friendly, ergonomically designed, and visually appealing products are more likely to be adopted by consumers as they enhance the overall user experience and satisfaction. Luckily, with advancements in technology and design, smart glasses have become more sleek, stylish, and sophisticated. By incorporating fashion-forward designs and trendy styles, smart glasses become more appealing and approachable to a broader range of consumers. This shift towards more fashionable smart glasses has driven their adoption and integration into mainstream fashion.

Furthermore, fashion and style are essential for smart glasses because they allow users to integrate this technology into their everyday lives seamlessly. When smart glasses are designed with fashion in mind, they become more versatile and can easily be worn in various settings, from professional environments to casual outings.

Fashionable and stylish smart glass iterations

Many iterations of smart glasses have failed for one reason or another, with most struggling to find a market due to their bulky styles. However, recent smart glasses developments were designed to be fashion-forward and appeal to trendy consumers.

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses:

As one of the leading brands in the fashion and eyewear industry, Ray-Ban is known mainly for its iconic sunglass designs. However, the brand has also been at the forefront of the smart glasses trend. Since 2021, the industry icon has partnered with Meta to release two generations of smart glasses called “Stories.” These high-tech glasses combine fashion and functionality, making them an innovative accessory for modern consumers.

Unlike many unrefined smart eyewear options on the market, Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses‘ default look is designed off the eyewear brand’s popular Wayfarers. These frames are some of their most well-known and have even been featured as accessories in films like Risky Business. The Wayfarers are also highly customizable, coming in over 150 frame and lens combinations. Of course, the glasses have also delivered on the tech front with innovative features — including the ability to overlay virtual information onto the real world, advanced gesture and voice recognition capabilities, and seamless connectivity options. The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have the potential to reshape the way users interact with their surroundings.

Huawei X Gentle Monster eyewear:

What makes the collaboration between the Chinese manufacturing company and the Korean eyewear brand stand out among the various tech accessories is its emphasis on style. By incorporating elements of contemporary fashion design in Huawei X Gentle Monster eyewear, the pieces effortlessly merge with everyday wardrobes.

Their first collection includes a carefully curated array of fashionable frames, including two sunglasses, the “Smart Eastmoon” and “Smart Jackbye,” as well as three eyeglasses, the “Smart Southside” and the “Smart Alio” in black or gold frames. With a focus on clean lines, minimalistic designs, and high-quality materials seamlessly integrating tech into wearable accessories, the eyewear exudes a sense of luxury and modernity. This makes it appealing to individuals conscious of style and substance. With AR capabilities, hands-free functionality, and intuitive controls, Gentle Monster’s eyewear offers users a seamless and futuristic experience.
