MORDECAI, an emerging name in the fashion world, has unveiled its first collection, “Flight Techniques,” during Men’s Fashion Week on January 12th, 2024, as part of the CNMI official calendar. This debut marks a milestone for the brand and its Creative Director, Ludovico Bruno. The collection is an exploration into the concept of lightness, both physical and metaphorical, questioning traditional fashion norms and challenging the conventional roles of garments. Bruno’s contemplative approach delves into the dual nature of clothing: how it can simultaneously cover and emphasize, protect and reveal, provide warmth and maintain coolness. This philosophical exploration forms the foundation of “Flight Techniques,” aiming to balance these contrasting elements in a harmonious and innovative fashion.
The inspiration for MORDECAI’s Collection #1 stems from a desire to travel light, emphasizing the need to discard the superfluous and focus on the indispensable. This philosophy is evident in the collection’s design, which strives to reduce excess and highlight only the essential elements that define a wardrobe without adding unnecessary weight. The collection draws inspiration from menswear staples and martial arts attire, focusing on lightness and precision with a silhouette-driven approach. The garments maintain a loose yet controlled form, featuring rounded, substantial shoulders and pants with deep folds that taper elegantly at the ankle. The collection revolves around neutral color palette, which includes new tones like cognac, burnt brown, and dark grey melange.
In terms of materials and craftsmanship, MORDECAI’s Collection #1 showcases a range of high-quality fabrics and innovative techniques. Super light matte nylon, fustian, mohair-like wool, hand-operated cashmere pashmina, and cupro silk are used to create a washed-used look, while sheepskin and leather in natural dark brown hues play a central role. Exclusive fabrics such as raw wool jacquard add patterns and textures. Knitwear also takes a prominent place in the collection, with baby alpaca and super kid mohair providing a soft, light texture to basics made of merino, cashmere, and cotton. A revolutionary knitting technique reimagines the traditional sweatshirt as a knitted cashmere grommet ensemble, offering a luxurious and comfortable alternative for active leisurewear.
