How to Create a Cohesive Kitchen Design: From Sinks to Splashbacks

Simple design decisions that bring unity to your kitchen - starting with fixtures, finishes, and the details in between

When designing a kitchen, the one factor that separates a basic renovation from a magazine-worthy space is cohesion. It’s not just about picking items you like – it’s about making thoughtful choices that work together across every element, from fixtures to finishes.

If you’re planning to update your kitchen and want it to feel stylish yet uncomplicated, focus on how each part connects to the next. From tapware and sinks to splashbacks and cabinetry, visual and functional consistency can elevate the entire space. With the right supplier, achieving a polished result is easier than it sounds.

Why Cohesion is the Secret Ingredient in Modern Kitchen Design

A cohesive kitchen creates visual balance. When materials, textures, and colors reflect one another, the space feels calm, clean, and considered. Instead of competing for attention, each component complements the next, producing a unified and practical design.

This doesn’t mean everything must match. A brushed brass faucet, for example, can pair beautifully with a neutral-toned stone or granite sink. The splashback might blend in or provide contrast, but it should always look deliberate – not accidental.

Cohesion also adds a sense of professionalism to the space. It communicates planning and intent. Importantly, buyers notice it too. A well-designed, consistent kitchen not only enhances a home’s visual impression but can also improve resale value. Many homebuyers consider the kitchen the most important room in the house – clear, cohesive design can make a real impact.

Start with Your Fixtures, Not Your Cabinets

While many renovators begin by selecting cabinetry or benchtop materials, experienced designers often recommend starting with your sink and tapware. These are the functional core of the kitchen. You use them every day – and they’re among the first features guests notice when they enter.

Tapware has come a long way since the days of finishing in stainless steel. Matte black, gunmetal grey, brushed brass, and rose gold finishes are all currently topping the charts. Such statement pieces can help set the visual language of your kitchen and can serve as an anchor to develop all your other choices.

The same goes for sinks. Undermount and topmount come in an array of finishes and materials that include stainless steel, granite, and quartz composite. A bold sink in a dark hue or stone texture elevated with a considered finish can do wonders to your kitchen’s aesthetic. And of course, check from the functional perspective-the depth of the basin, width, or the number of bowls you feel on a daily basis.

To make it easier, many homeowners are turning to retailers who specialize in matching these items. That’s why sites like Buildmat are getting popular. They offer an array of sinks, tapware, and kitchen accessories that are designed to work well together. This makes it simple to mix and match without worrying about clashing styles or materials.

Tie it Together with the Right Splashback

Once you’ve chosen your fixtures, it’s time to select your splashback. This is one of the most noticeable parts of your kitchen, and it plays a key role in tying everything together. A good splashback does more than protect your walls – it also adds personality and can help open up the space by reflecting light.

Think about what look you want – here are some options:

  • Subway tiles with matching grout for a classic, clean effect

  • A slab of engineered stone or porcelain for a modern, streamlined feel

  • Textured tiles in soft tones to balance darker sinks and tapware

When selecting a splashback, keep in mind the colors of your sink and taps. For instance, if you have a dark granite sink, soft grey or white tiles can work nicely. If your taps are a brushed brass, look at warm beige, off-white, or blush tiles to complement those tones without making the space feel heavy.

Also, think about the finish. Glossy tiles will bounce light around and brighten things up, while matte or handmade finishes can bring some unique charm and depth.

Accessories: The Finishing Touch

Small details can make a big difference in how your kitchen looks and feels. Once your main pieces are chosen, it’s important to keep the same cohesive approach with your accessories. They may seem minor, but they help tie everything together.

Consider:

  • Cabinet handles that match your faucet – like black knobs paired with a black mixer

  • Soap dispensers and sink accessories that reflect your overall design, such as drying trays or dish racks that sit neatly by the sink

  • Light fixtures or pendant lamps that echo the same metal tones or shapes as your tapware

  • Under-sink bins and storage that stay hidden but still work well within your layout

Even small items like tea towels, utensil holders, and chopping boards can reinforce your kitchen’s look when selected carefully. These final touches can pull the design together and make it feel complete.

Go Beyond Looks: Think Functionally

A good kitchen isn’t just about how it looks – it also needs to fit your lifestyle. Think about how you cook, how many people share the space, and how you use the kitchen day-to-day. Do you need more bench space for food prep? Would a double sink help more than a single one? Is your splashback easy to clean?

Design choices that prioritize flow – like placing the sink close to the cooktop or ensuring good lighting where you prep food – can make your kitchen far more efficient.

Design Smarter, Shop Smarter

Designing a cohesive, functional kitchen doesn’t require a massive budget or experience. Plenty of modern, well-matched products make it easy to create a stylish space that feels considered from every angle.

If you want to simplify the process of choosing matching products, suppliers like Buildmat offer sinks, taps, and accessories designed to work well together.
